Malindo introduces no fee for flight changes

KUALA LUMPUR: Malindo Air has removed charges on flight changes for the business and economy classes in conjunction with the “No Change Fee” campaign, starting yesterday.

In a statement on Monday, Malindo Air said passengers could change their flight dates and time up to 24 hours prior to their departure to their convenience as there was no limit to the permissible changes.

“The ‘No Change Fee’ is valid for all existing and new bookings and is not applicable to the ‘promo’ fares,” it said. Chief Executive Officer, Chandran Rama Muthy, said the airline was the first local carrier to offer such service.

“We want to offer our passengers great value by taking away the changes fee. Now we don’t have to pay high fees to get your ticket changed or pay additional to buy flexi tickets.

“We believe that the ‘No Change Fee’ campaign, coupled with our value-added fares and superior service, will encourage more travel and boost the economy,” he said. –Bernama

Two held in syabu probe

SANDAKAN: Marine police arrested two men and seized from them 19.11 grams of syabu.

The duo were nabbed after a brief boat chase in Sungai Pitas at Mile 7 Jalan Sungai Kayu on Sunday.

State marine police commander ACP Mohamad Madun said a marine police boat on patrol during ‘Op Pensura” in Sungai Pitas spotted a speedboat heading towards Sungai Korek at about 2.15pm on Aug 16.

On realising the presence of the marine police boat, the speedboat raced off, ignoring a warning to stop. The marine police patrol boat then gave chase and intercepted the speedboat, Mohamad said. The boatman and his passenger tried to jump into river to escape but were nabbed.

Two packets containing syabu were seized from one of the suspects.

“And, upon further checks on the speedboat, the marine police team seized a plastic bag and found 28 packets of syabu and aluminum foils inside,” Mohamad said.

He said the seized substance together with the outboard engine and speedboat were estimated to be worth RM 10,500.

The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for imprisonment of not less than two years and not exceeding five years and caning between three and nine strokes of the cane in the event of conviction.

Mohamad said the syabu and the two suspects were brought to the Sandakan marine police base and referred to the district narcotics crime investigation unit for further action.

Polis Marin Sandakan Rampas 2,600 Biji Telur Penyu Seludup

SANDAKAN, 18 Ogos (Bernama) -- Sebanyak 2,600 telur penyu yang hendak diseludup ke daerah ini dirampas Pasukan Polis Marin (PPM) di pesisir pantai Kampung Forest dekat sini, hari ini.

Komander PPM Wilayah 4 Sabah, ACP Mohamad Madun berkata nilai rampasan telur penyu itu dianggarkan berjumlah RM3,120.

Katanya anggota PPM yang melakukan rondaan di kawasan itu pada pukul 4 pagi, mengesan dua lelaki menaiki sebuah bot pam memunggah barang ke pantai.

Kedua-dua lelaki itu bagaimanapun melarikan diri dengan menggunakan bot pam tersebut sebaik menyedari kehadiran anggota PPM, katanya dalam kenyataan di sini.

Mohamad berkata hasil pemeriksaan menjumpai enam bungkus plastik hijau dan dua karung guni berisi telur penyu disyaki diseludup dari negara jiran untuk pasaran gelap di daerah ini.

Katanya telur penyu tersebut kemudian diserahkan kepada Jabatan Hidupan Liar untuk tindakan lanjut.

Mt Kinabalu’s guides seeking alternative sources of income

KUNDASANG: Since the devastating earthquake last 5 June, quite a number of mountain guides or “malim gunung” have opted to seek other sources of income while waiting for Mount Kinabalu to be open to climbers again.

Mohd Zainudin Robet Abdullah is one such mountain guide who now earns a living working at a vegetable wholesaler in Kundasang town.

The 22-year-old told New Sabah Times that he’s quite happy doing something different from mountain guiding since last month.

“In the meantime, I just want to take a break from mountain guiding this year. There are still a lot of things that I cannot forget,” he said when met at the vegetable stall where he is employed.
He was initially concerned about finding another job after the mountain was closed.

“I am thankful to have found this job,” he said and added that he would return to climbing the mountain again next year to allow his thoughts settle after having witnessed so much tragedy and horror.
Memories of the first tremor from the 5.9 magnitude earthquake are still fresh in his mind.

“I was at the peak helping climbers take photographs when the mountain shook. I thought a huge plane had landed on the mountain.

“Then suddenly rocks and boulders came tumbling down and there was so much dust everywhere. We were all terrified!”

Despite their own fears, Zainudin and the other mountain guides tried to calm the climbers and together with his five colleagues, escorted 13 climbers from the peninsula.
“We gathered everyone at the checkpoint and went to look for water. Many were hungry but there was only water to drink,” he said.

They finally reached Timpohon Gate at 3am but not before having to go past Via Ferrata where they saw dead bodies, some dismembered, strewn on the ground.
The “malim gunung” have since been given awards and aid for their heroic deed and sacrifice. However, not all the aid and assistance distributed have been equal.

Zainudin is not a fully licensed guide and his status is that of trainee.
“What the fully licensed malim gunung get and what the trainees get are very different. Those fully licensed get more recognition and priority,” he lamented.

“The trainees and those fully licensed all worked together to rescue the climbers that day but we didn’t all get the same kind of assistance,” he added.

Nevertheless, he was quick to point out that he was grateful to be alive in spite of everything. Zainudin hails from Tenom and lives with his family in Kundasang.

Ada pihak sabotaj ekonomi Malaysia - Datuk Seri Dr. Salleh Said Keruak

KUALA LUMPUR - Sabotaj ekonomi digunakan sebagai senjata paling berkuasa untuk menyerang Malaysia dan menjejaskan kredibiliti kerajaan, kata Menteri Komunikasi dan Multimedia, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

Perunding media Barat dibayar untuk memutarbelitkan cerita mengenai dakwaan rasuah dilakukan oleh Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak dan ekonomi Malaysia di ambang muflis.

"Ini bukan sahaja berniat jahat tetapi juga perbuatan khianat. Sabotaj ekonomi, terutamanya yang dirancang dan dibiayai oleh rakyat Malaysia, sememangnya suatu perbuatan khianat," katanya dalam catatan di blog beliau, sskeruak.blogspot.com hari ini. 

Beliau berkata pengkhianat ini perlu didedahkan dan tindakan sewajarnya diambil terhadap mereka. 

"Bagi mengukuhkan lagi dakwaan ini, malahan terdapat usaha untuk menyerang ringgit bagi 'membuktikan' bahawa dunia benar-benar telah hilang keyakinan terhadap Malaysia. 

"Gambaran yang diberikan ialah ringgit yang rendah bermakna Malaysia menuju ke arah 'kemusnahan'. Malah, mereka mengatakan Malaysia antara negara yang dianggap sebagai 'negara yang gagal'," kata Salleh.

Beliau berkata sabotaj ekonomi merupakan senjata paling berkuasa untuk menjatuhkan kerajaan, kadangkala lebih berkesan daripada tindakan ketenteraan.    

Misalnya, laporan terkini dari Thailand yang menyatakan letupan bom di Bangkok semalam bertujuan untuk mensabotaj ekonomi Thailand, kata Salleh.

"Malaysia turut menerima sabotaj ekonomi yang sama, walaupun bukan dengan cara seperti yang mereka lakukan di Thailand," kata Salleh.

Beliau turut menekankan bahawa negara tidak boleh dibiarkan menanggung keadaan ini semata-mata untuk memenuhi cita-cita politik mereka yang ingin menggulingkan kerajaan dan merebut kuasa melalui cara yang tidak mengikut perlembagaan. - Bernama

Wanita Maut Lori Terhumban Ke Gaung Di Jalan Sandakan-Beluran

SANDAKAN: Seorang wanita maut apabila lori tiga tan dinaikinya terbabas dan terhumban ke dalam gaung di Kilometer 56 Jalan Sandakan-Beluran, semalam. Ketua Polis Daerah Sandakan, ACP Zabidi Mohd Zain, berkata pemandu lori tersebut yang berusia 29 tahun turut cedera parah, tetapi dilaporkan dalam keadaan stabil dan kini dirawat di Hospital Beluran. Katanya kejadian berlaku jam 5.30 petang apabila lori terbabit hilang kawalan lalu terbabas dan terjunam ke dalam gaung sedalam 30 meter.

"Akibat kejadian itu, penumpang lori iaitu seorang wanita yang identitinya belum dikenal pasti, berusia lingkungan 30-an mati di tempat kejadian. "Maklumat mangsa belum diperoleh disebabkan tiada dokumen pengenalan diri dijumpai," katanya. Kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 41 (1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987 dan beliau meminta saksi kejadian agar tampil memberi maklumat bagi membantu siasatan. -BERNAMA
