Kesan-kesan buruk akibat daripada pembakaran arang batu yang membawa maut BUKAN LAGI hanya “teori”, “andaian” atau “kepercayaan”. Kesan-kesan buruk ini TELAH DISAHKAN secara rasmi oleh Mahkamah Daerah Persekutuan Amerika Syarikat di Negeri North Carolina, dalam kes North Carolina ex rel. Cooper v. Tennessee Valley Authority (593 F.Supp.2d 812).
Pada 13 Januari 2009, Hakim Daerah Lacy H. Thornburg telah mengisytiharkan bahawa pelepasan udara daripada loji-loji arang batu TVA yang terletak di negeri-negeri Tennessee dan Alabama adalah satu “gangguan awam” (public nuisance) terhadap negeri jiran North Carolina. Ini merupakan satu “gangguan tidak munasabah” terhadap “harta, kesihatan, keselamatan, keamanan, atau kemudahan” orang awam. Mahkamah berkata bahawa loji-loji tersebut telah mengakibatkan “kecederaan, penyusahan [dan] kerosakan” secara serius di North Carolina.
Setelah mendengar bukti-bukti/keterangan pakar (expert evidence) yang dikemukakan oleh semua pihak (termasuk pihak pengurusan loji arang batu, TVA), Hakim tersebut mengisytiharkan bahawa pelepasan udara daripada loji-loji arang batu boleh mengakibatkan kesan-kesan kemusnahan kepada kesihatan manusia dan alam sekitar. Beliau juga mengarahkan TVA supaya memasang peralatan-peralatan kawalan pencemaran di 4 buah loji arang batunya.
Antara perkara-perkara lain, Hakim tersebut mengisytiharkan bahawa (secara ringkas):
a) Proses pembakaran dalam “boiler” loji arang batu menyebabkan arang batu mengalami perubahan kimia, yang membebaskan nitrogen, sulfur, dan merkuri;
b) Elemen-elemen kimia ini kemudian membentuk bahan-bahan kimia berbahaya seperti Nitrogen oksida (NOx), Sulfur dioksida (SO2), Ozon (O3) dan debu-debu halus dipanggil “PM2.5”, sebelum atau selepas dilepaskan ke dalam udara.
c) Walaupun kebanyakan daripada bahan kimia ini ditangkap atau dirawat dalam loji arang batu, bukan semua dicegah daripada dilepaskan daripada loji.

Allegations of government corruption and corporate kick-backs are swirling around a planned 300 MW Chinese coal plant in the Malaysian state of Sabah.
While the plan to build the coal plant in Lahad Datu Bay has come up against strong and unrelenting grassroots opposition, the federal government continues to largely turn a deaf ear to opposition, arguing that the energy plant is necessary to power Sabah and stop blackouts. However, critics say the coal plant—which is to be built on the edge of the Coral Triangle and 20 kilometers from Tabin Wildlife Reserve—will damage fish stocks with chlorine and thermal discharges, upend the lives of locals dependent on fishing, and devastate eco-tourism in the region. In addition, the coal plant goes directly against Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's agreement at Copenhagen to reduce the country's carbon emission intensity by 40 percent by 2020.
Despite these clear concerns—and increasing opposition—sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity say the plant has continued to move ahead due to government nepotism, corruption, and kick-backs. In fact, sources say the federal government has already paid out nearly a quarter of the cost of the coal plant to the contracted company, China National Electric Equipment Company (CNEEC), and that at least one official has seen a significant kickback from this.

Indeed as we can see many people not just in Sabah, Malaysia but also people around the world claiming that development of coal in Sabah will lead to complete destruction area of prestige ecosystem in Sabah. Why do Goverment still consider to built the coal for electricity resources. In both articles stated the consequence causes by the coal. We can save the ecosystem and people will live freely without air contamination so that we can live without fear by getting health dilemma. Come on people of Sabah, save our ecosystems for better living and environment.
